Etymology of TARIANO Architecture Studio

We selected the name TARIANO with full awareness of its profound historical and semantic layers, so that every utterance of it provokes a fundamental question: Can contemporary architecture still carry the depth and authenticity of an ancient civilization, or does it merely succumb to the repetition of transient forms?

Taryana (also spelled Tareiana), an Achaemenid city dating back more than 2,500 years, stood precisely where modern Ahvaz now lies, on the banks of the ancient Ulai River (today’s Karun) at the intersection with the Royal Road. This was no ordinary settlement; it represented deliberate and audacious choices: embracing the river as a partner in life rather than an adversary, transforming a strategic crossroads into a source of power instead of fragmentation, and building resiliently within nature rather than in defiance of it. Later, during the Sasanian era, Ardashir I (Ardashir Babakan) rebuilt and expanded the city, renaming it Hormazd-Ardashir—a designation that evoked divine and royal continuity—and ensured its prosperity through irrigation systems and dams. This process of renewal endured, evolving through various names until it became the Ahvaz of today.

In TARIANO Office, we adopt this name to continually challenge ourselves: to elevate design beyond mere technical execution and aesthetic appeal into a deeper realm, where architecture becomes a critical re-examination of humanity’s relationship with time, place, and the natural environment.
